October 2026 Google Ranking Volatility: What We Know

Google UpdatesSEO

In short

Search Engine Roundtable reported ranking volatility and heavy SEO chatter on 16 October, 20 to 21 October and 24 October 2026. Google has not confirmed an update, and its dashboard lists nothing after the September spam update. Before changing anything, check Search Console against those dates and rule out other causes.

Ranking volatility was reported on three dates in October 2026: 16 October, 20 to 21 October, and 24 October. Google has not confirmed an update for any of them. This is what the reporting says, and what I would do about it.

What happened

Search Engine Roundtable reported spikes on third-party ranking tools, alongside heavy chatter in the SEO community, on three occasions:

  • 16 October: a spike in volatility and chatter over the previous day or so, about ranking changes, referral traffic and disruption in Search. Report.
  • 20 to 21 October: volatility and chatter picked up again. The author wrote that he thought there was an unconfirmed ranking update going on. Report.
  • 24 October: significant volatility on many tracking tools, plus more chatter. The author wrote that the two together made him believe Google released some kind of ranking adjustment from Friday into Saturday. Report.

That belief is his opinion. It is not something Google has said.

What Google has said

Nothing. Google’s Search Status Dashboard lists no ranking update after the September 2026 spam update, which started on 24 September and was marked complete on 8 October. So none of the three October dates is an official update.

A caution about the tools

Search Engine Roundtable also noted that the third-party tracking tools have been struggling over the past month, although many said they have mitigated the issues by now. In practice, volatility charts may be less reliable than usual, which is one more reason not to treat any single spike as proof of an update. In the 21 October report, Glenn Gabe said the tracking tools were not picking up the entire picture in a case he was following.

Who seems affected

Nobody knows, because there is no official update. Forum comments Roundtable quoted were mixed. Some people reported traffic falling, most often from Discover and News, and others reported traffic up. Those are individual reports, not data. Don’t read them as a pattern for your own site.

How to check your own site

  1. Open Search Console and look at your performance for the three dates, 16 October, 20 to 21 October and 24 October.
  2. Compare the same days of the week, for example Saturday against the Saturday before, so the normal weekly pattern doesn’t mislead you.
  3. Break any change down by page, query, device and country. A drop in one page tells you something different from a drop everywhere.
  4. Rule out other causes: seasonality, tracking problems, a recent website change, and technical issues such as pages dropping out of the index.
  5. If you rely on Discover, check it separately. It behaves differently from search.

My Google update recovery guide goes through these checks in more detail.

What to do, and what not to do

Do:

  • Write down what you see before you change anything, including dates, pages and queries.
  • Keep publishing and maintaining your site as normal.
  • Check again in a week before you decide anything.

Don’t:

  • Rewrite pages or delete content because of one bad day.
  • Pay for a quick fix from someone who says they know what Google changed. Nobody outside Google does.
  • Assume a drop was caused by an update. It may not have been.

If Google confirms an update, its dates will appear on the dashboard, and I will add it to the tracker.

Keep track

Every update, confirmed or not, is listed with sources in the Google and AI search update tracker. If your traffic dropped and you want a clear diagnosis, see the Traffic Drop Audit, or start with a free SEO audit.

Frequently asked questions

Has Google confirmed an update in October 2026?

No. As of 26 October 2026 Google's Search Status Dashboard lists no ranking update after the September 2026 spam update, which it marked complete on 8 October. The volatility on 16, 20 to 21 and 24 October is unconfirmed, and Google may never confirm it.

Is this the core update?

Google has not announced a core update. Search Engine Roundtable's author wrote that he expects one soon, but that is his expectation, not an announcement from Google.

What should I do if my traffic dropped in October?

Don't make drastic changes yet. Check Search Console against the dates, rule out seasonality, tracking and technical problems, and look at which pages and queries changed. Follow the recovery guide if the drop holds.
