Too Good to Be True? The Truth About SEO and Digital Marketing Guarantees
In short
Guarantees of page-one rankings or a fixed number of leads in 30 days are marketing bait, not real accountability. No one controls Google's algorithm, so genuine guarantees come with heavy caveats. Instead of empty promises, look for realistic outcomes, transparency and honest reporting. EightySix Digital offers realistic expectations and real work, not guarantees.
Ah yes, the promise of digital marketing guarantees. The shiny bait tossed out by slick agencies fishing for small business budgets: “We’ll get you on page one of Google. Guaranteed!” or “100 leads in your inbox within 30 days or your money back!”
It sounds like a dream come true. But spoiler alert: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Let’s have a good look under the hood at these so-called digital marketing guarantees, why they’re often full of loop holes, and how they’re used to lure in hardworking Kiwi tradies and business owners.
The Ranking Racket: Guaranteed Page One, Eh?
A classic line in the world of digital marketing guarantees is “We guarantee you’ll rank on page one of Google.” That’s the holy grail, right? Trouble is, they often conveniently forget to tell you what you’ll rank for.
Sure, you might hit page one for “award-winning right-handed plumber in Te Kuiti,” but no one’s searching that. It’s a little like winning gold at a sack race you entered alone.
In reality, no one, not your SEO agency, not even Google’s interns can guarantee top rankings. The algorithm is more changeable than the Dunedin weather and unless your agency owns Google (they don’t), they’re making promises they can’t control.
Traffic and Leads, By Any Means Necessary
Another popular gimmick: “100 leads in 30 days!” Great, let’s fire up the phones!
But wait, what exactly counts as a lead? A person who fills out a form? A bot that clicked an ad from overseas? Someone who asked if you do grooming for cats (and you’re a roofer)?
Some agencies treat any activity as a “lead.” That includes accidental clicks, spam emails, and phone calls from telemarketers. It’s lead generation meets loose interpretation.
You might as well count your mum texting you about dinner as engagement.
Let’s Talk About Those “Money-Back” Promises
Now we’re into Vegas territory. Some agencies say, “Don’t worry, if we don’t deliver results, we’ll refund you.” Sounds noble, until you check the terms and conditions buried deeper than a septic tank.
Here’s what those terms often reveal:
- “Results” means a 2% increase in impressions.
- “Deliver” means at some point in the last six months you had a click.
- “Refund” only applies if you used every single one of their services and paid in gold doubloons.
Real example: One NZ-based agency promises a “100% money-back guarantee if you don’t reach the front page.” Sounds bold, until you realise they never mention the keywords, timeline, or if they include ads in that count.
If you read the fine print, these “guarantees” are only deliverable if you spend a minimum amount with them (usually $2k+ a month) and you stay paying them, every month, for at least 6 months.
Then, and only then, will they justify that $12k spend on the fact you’re ranking for “Plumber in St. Heliers that can change my tap”, which with the use of any free SEO tool, such as Ubersuggest, you’ll see that keyword has a 9/100 SEO difficulty rating (meaning my Nan could get me ranking for that), with a monthly search volume of …… wait for it …… 0.
Real Guarantees, Real Caveats
Let’s take a peek at what some actual guarantees in New Zealand look like (names withheld to protect the overconfident and so I don’t get sued):
- “If you don’t get on the front page, you get a 100% money-back guarantee.” Catch? No keyword, timeframe, or channel specified. Meaning you’ve got to contact them and brave the barrage of sales calls.
- “We guarantee page 1 results within 90 days or we work for free.” Catch? Not a single word on what counts as a result. Page one for what? Your business name? These are usually low difficulty keywords that you could achieve yourself with a well optimised page.
- “Guaranteed results or you pay nothing till we do.” Catch? No clue what those results are. Could be a single blog view. Could be a lunar eclipse. Again, forcing you to make contact and deal with sales people.
- “We back up our guarantee with results and facts.” Catch? Case studies show good performance, but that doesn’t mean every client gets the same.
If you’ve fallen for this trap, it may pay to dig out those terms and conditions that you’ve unwillingly agreed to and see just what exactly this so called “money back guarantee” actually qualifies you for.
One particular loop hole I found, which made me laugh a little, was the promise of improved performance on a Google Ad campaign. However, the terms stipulated that the ad campaign had to have already been running for at least 12 months and there is proof of sales/conversions from this ad campaign.
Essentially, what they’re saying is; if you’ve proved you can sell a product or service, we’ll guarantee that we can sell more. NO. SHIT. Ramp up the ad spend, improve the ad quality and make some tweaks to the landing page.
That’ll be $10k please.
**“Guarantee applies to select non-competitive keywords identified by our internal team as part of your customised keyword strategy.”
“A ‘lead’ is defined as any completed form submission, phone call (answered or not), or other user engagement as measured by platform analytics.”
“Client must maintain full and timely payment of all invoiced services. Failure to do so may result in suspension of services and voidance of any performance-related guarantees.”
“Performance obligations are contingent upon the client’s website being live, accessible, and free from outages or third-party interference.”
“Any adjustments to the agreed monthly investment may result in renegotiation or termination of existing guarantee provisions.”
“Client-initiated changes to website structure, content, or tracking code without prior approval may invalidate performance guarantees.”**
“Performance guarantees shall become applicable only after a continuous service period of no less than 180 days, during which the client must maintain full service scope and payment compliance.”
Just a few of my favourite “get out of jail free” clauses I’ve found in some terms and conditions
Why the Word “Guarantee” Is So Slippery
In marketing, a “guarantee” should mean accountability. But in digital marketing guarantees, it often means vague performance metrics, cherry-picked data, and promises built on hope and spin.
Here’s the reality: SEO takes time. Good results come from well-built websites, real content, solid backlinks, and consistency. That doesn’t fit into a flashy headline, but it works.
SEO is a long-term marketing strategy, not something you should hang the success or failure of your business on. If you need short term results then look into pay-per-click ads or social media.
In an ideal world you should be focusing on both SEO and SEM.
Digital marketing guarantees are often just sales tools, a way to sound confident while offering very little in writing.
What to Look For Instead
If you’re looking for someone to grow your traffic, get more leads, and win jobs, here’s what to ask instead:
- Can I see actual results from similar NZ businesses?
- What keywords are being targeted?
- How do you measure success?
- Do I own the work you’ve done if we stop working together?
- Check their Google Reviews!
Agencies that won’t answer those are likely the same ones offering you the sun, moon, and stars, for a 12-month lock-in contract and a $24k bill.

Frequently asked questions
Can an SEO agency guarantee page-one rankings?
No one can honestly guarantee specific rankings, because no one controls Google's algorithm. Any firm promising guaranteed page-one results is usually relying on fine print, obscure keywords, or hope. Genuine accountability comes from realistic targets and transparent reporting, not promises.
Are 100-leads-in-30-days guarantees trustworthy?
Be very cautious. Such claims often count low-quality enquiries or rely on loopholes. Real lead generation depends on your market, budget and offer, so honest providers set realistic expectations rather than headline-grabbing guarantees.
What about money-back guarantees in digital marketing?
They sound reassuring but usually come with conditions that make claiming a refund difficult. The guarantee is often more about winning your business than protecting you. Focus on a provider's track record and transparency instead.
What should I look for instead of guarantees?
Look for realistic outcomes based on your market, clear explanations of the work, honest reporting and a track record. A good provider is accountable and transparent rather than leaning on slippery guarantees to win you over.
