Google October 2026 AI Mode Ads Expansion: What Changed and What to Do
In short
On 28 October 2026 Google said it is scaling ads in AI Mode to 10 countries, including New Zealand, Australia and Canada, with the UK, Brazil and Mexico planned for Q4. Existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are eligible automatically, and you can't opt out of AI Mode separately. Check your conversion tracking before changing anything.
On 28 October 2026 Google said it is bringing ads in AI Mode to more countries, including New Zealand, Australia and Canada. If you run Google Ads, your campaigns may already be eligible without you changing anything. Here is what Google said and what I would check.
What happened
Google’s announcement, “Ads in AI Mode expand to new markets”, says it is scaling ads in AI Mode in Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore. In Q4 2026 it plans to expand to additional locales, including Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom.
It is also launching multiturn ads in the United States. These appear on responses to follow-up questions in AI Mode. All ads are labelled “Sponsored”.

Dates
- Announced: 28 October 2026.
- Countries now: the ten listed above.
- Planned for Q4 2026: Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom. Google said “plan to”, so treat that as intent, not a date.
- Per-country start dates: none given.
What Google said
Google’s announcement says queries in AI Mode are on average three times longer than traditional searches, and that its research shows people are comfortable with ads in AI Mode. It also says click-through rates are already similar between sponsored and organic product list items within AI Mode. Those are Google’s own claims, and they refer to product listings, so I wouldn’t read them as a result for a local service business.
Google’s help page on ads in AI-powered experiences adds the detail that matters for advertisers:
- Existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are automatically eligible. You don’t need a new campaign or a separate budget.
- You can’t target AI Overviews or AI Mode on their own, or opt out of them separately from Search. Negative keywords and brand exclusions still apply.
- Ads use the same auction and the same bidding models as standard Search ads, and you aren’t charged extra to take part.
- Results are included in aggregate in your normal campaign and search terms reports, not shown separately.
- Exact and phrase match keywords are eligible when a query shows direct commercial intent. AI Max for Search, broad match, Shopping and Performance Max are also eligible for contextual matching against the AI response.
- Google says paid advertising does not influence organic AI responses, and that being cited organically does not affect your ad eligibility.
Who seems affected
Advertisers in the listed countries, because their existing campaigns are eligible automatically. Google’s announcement does not describe any effect on organic traffic. Search Engine Roundtable noted that Google first launched ads in AI Mode in May 2025.
How to see it in your own data
You can’t see AI Mode on its own. Check these instead:
- In Google Ads, compare impressions, clicks, conversions and cost for the weeks before and after 28 October. Look for changes in search terms, since AI Mode queries tend to be longer.
- Confirm your conversion tracking still works, because Google’s own advice is to pair broader targeting with accurate conversion data.
- Check Search Console separately for organic changes, and don’t assume a change in one explains the other.
What to do, and what not to do
Do:
- Review your search terms report for the new, longer queries and add negative keywords for anything irrelevant.
- Keep your website content clear and up to date. Google says that helps it surface accurate context.
- Keep an eye on spend. Existing campaigns take part without a separate budget, so AI Mode spends from the budgets you already have.
Don’t:
- Change bids or budgets in a panic after one week of data.
- Assume a traffic drop is caused by AI Mode. Search Engine Roundtable has also reported unconfirmed ranking volatility this month, which I cover in October 2026 Google ranking volatility.
If you do not run ads, there is nothing to set up. Your organic visibility still depends on clear pages, accurate business details and good reviews.
