Google October 2026 AI Mode Links Update: What Changed and What to Do

Google UpdatesSEOAEOGEO

In short

On 15 October 2026 Google said AI Mode and AI Overviews will show more inline links, placed higher in responses more often, and began two tests: official pages at the top and clickable creator names on video. Google gave no country list or exact dates. Check your own data before changing anything.

On 15 October 2026 Google said it is changing how links appear in AI Mode and AI Overviews. In short: more links, higher up, with two tests on the side. Google gave no country list and no exact dates, so this is a direction of travel, not a switch that flipped on one day.

What happened

Google’s announcement (“More ways to connect with the web from Search”) lists these changes:

  • Inline links: Google says it has made “continued and substantial increases to the presence of inline links” in its AI experiences, and is launching updates to place them higher in responses more often.
  • News carousels: Google is starting to roll out carousels of timely articles to more locations and languages. They highlight Preferred Sources. Google says use of Preferred Sources has grown by more than 7x since the start of the year.
  • Links at the end of responses: some will be more prominent, with image thumbnails and a more clickable design. Google did not say whether this is a rollout or a test.
  • Test: official pages at the top. Google is testing a display that shows one or two official pages in a section at the top of a response, with context on why each link is useful.
  • Test: creator names on video. Google has started testing clickable creator and publisher names on video results in AI Mode. They link to the creator’s Search profile.

Dates

  • Announced: 15 October 2026.
  • Rollout: news carousels are “starting to roll out” and the higher inline links are being launched. No end date was given.
  • Tests: the official-pages section and the creator-name links. Google did not say when, or whether, they will expand.
  • Countries and languages: Google only says “additional locations and languages globally” for the news carousels. It names none.

This is not a ranking update. Google’s Search Status Dashboard lists no new incident since the September 2026 spam update.

Who seems affected

Google doesn’t say, and its announcement describes no impact on site traffic. Some limits come from Search Engine Journal’s reading of Google’s help pages. It reports that the Search profile page, when checked on 15 October, listed the US, Canada and India, creators with at least 10,000 followers on YouTube, Instagram, X or TikTok, and account holders aged 18 or over. If you are in New Zealand, Australia or the UK, the creator-name test is unlikely to apply to you yet. That is an inference from the list as reported, not something Google announced.

Search Engine Roundtable notes that Google’s AI performance reports still lack click data, and that Google told the author it will introduce additional metrics over time.

What this could mean for your site

Treat this part as my opinion, not Google’s.

More links higher up could mean more chances to be cited, and more chances to be skipped if your page doesn’t answer the question. The official-pages test is the one to watch. Google describes it as showing one or two official pages for a task. If you are a business with a clear website, that is your page in front of someone ready to act. Whether it favours brand sites on branded searches is not something Google has said.

What to do, and what not to do

Do:

  1. Look at your own data first. In Search Console, use the generative AI performance reports to see impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Don’t expect clicks to be there. Compare the weeks before and after 15 October and rule out seasonality.
  2. Make your official pages clear. One page per service, with what you do, where you do it, how to contact you and what it costs or how to book. Keep your Google Business Profile current. See service pages built for AI Overviews.
  3. Keep a monthly test log. Ask the questions your customers ask in AI Mode and AI Overviews and record who gets cited. Our guide to tracking whether you show up in AI Overviews shows how.
  4. Get cited in AI Overviews the boring way. Google says there are no additional requirements beyond being indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Clear pages that answer the question win. There is no trick. See how to get mentioned in ChatGPT and AI Overviews.

Don’t: rewrite your site because of a test Google may change next month, or pay anyone who promises a place in AI answers.

One unconfirmed report

LLM Pulse reports that, across the sites it monitors, daily ChatGPT referral sessions in GA4 fell about 46% from 9 to 11 October 2026 compared with the same days in the two previous weeks. It says it can’t tell whether those visits were lost or are arriving untagged as Direct, and it did not state how many sites it analysed. OpenAI has not announced any change to how links or sources are shown. This is one source and unconfirmed. If your own GA4 shows a dip around those dates, note it, but don’t treat it as a cause until there is more than one source. Read the report.

Frequently asked questions

When is the October 2026 AI Mode and AI Overviews links update rolling out?

Google announced it on 15 October 2026. It said it is starting to roll out the news carousels to more locations and languages and is launching updates to place inline links higher more often. It gave no country list, language list or exact dates, and two of the changes are tests.

Will the update send more traffic to my website?

Google did not say. Its announcement describes more and higher links but gives no figures on clicks. Search Console's generative AI reports show impressions, and clicks were not among the metrics listed when they launched. Compare your own data before and after, and don't assume a change either way.

How do I get cited in AI Overviews?

Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. In practice that means clear, crawlable pages that answer the question properly, and accurate business details.
