SEO vs Google Ads for Melbourne Businesses: Choosing by Business Type and Cash Flow
In short
For a Melbourne business, the choice depends on what you sell and how quickly cash comes back in. Urgent, same-day trades can justify Google Ads first. Shopfronts, clinics and big-ticket project work usually gain more from local SEO and reviews. Work out each channel's monthly commitment first, start with one, and add the other when cash allows.
Most advice on this question starts with the channel. Start with your bank account instead. Google Ads is a cost that starts on day one and stops delivering the day you stop paying. SEO is a cost that also starts on day one, but delivers later and keeps delivering. Which one you can carry depends on the business you run and how quickly money comes back in.
Melbourne makes this a bigger decision than it looks. The ABS puts Greater Melbourne at 5,435,590 people at 30 June 2025 (a preliminary estimate), up 2.0% in a year. The growth is mostly on the edges. Rockbank and Mount Cottrell added 4,602 people, Mickleham and Yuroke 4,145, Fraser Rise and Plumpton 4,064. Your customers are spread across a very large area, and each channel handles that differently.
Do the monthly maths first
Google Ads. Google can spend up to twice your average daily budget on a busy day, but over a month it won’t charge more than 30.4 times that daily figure. Our Melbourne Google Ads management page suggests most trades start at around AU$30 to AU$45 a day. That is a ceiling of roughly AU$912 to AU$1,368 a month in clicks, paid to Google. Our management fee is a flat AU$520 a month plus a one-off AU$250 setup, and it stays the same on the budgets most trades run. There is no lock-in.
So the Ads route is at most about AU$1,432 to AU$1,888 a month all in, and enquiries can start within weeks.
SEO. Our Melbourne SEO plans start at AU$520 a month for a focused local plan (4 hours a month) and from AU$650 for the full plan (5 or more hours). There are no per-click costs. The catch is time. On that page we say most local businesses see real movement by month three, with stronger results compounding from around month six.
So the SEO route costs less each month but pays later. The real question is whether you can carry two or three months of spending with little to show for it.
Match the channel to the kind of business
Urgent, same-day trades. A burst pipe, a power failure, a locked-out customer. The person searching wants whoever answers first. Ads can reach them this week, and a call that gets answered is worth the click. Start with ads aimed tightly at the suburbs you can reach fast, and build your profile and reviews behind them.
Renovations, installs and other big jobs. People take weeks, read reviews and compare. Ads can still catch the late stage of that, but what wins the job is proof: reviews, photos of finished work, a site that explains the process. Start with SEO and your Google Business Profile, and use ads for the one or two services with the best margin. Our guide to ranking in Google Maps in Melbourne is the place to begin.
Shopfronts, clinics, cafes and salons. Most of your new customers come from the map. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, and says you can’t pay for a better local ranking. Ads can’t fix a weak profile. Put the money into the profile, the reviews and the site first, and use ads for launches, sales and new services.
Professional services and B2B. Searches are fewer and sales cycles are longer, so a small ad budget can run out before it teaches you anything. Check search volumes in Keyword Planner before you spend. SEO and strong service pages usually carry more weight here, with ads reserved for a specific, well-defined service.
A brand-new business. You have no rankings and no reviews, so SEO has nothing to build on yet. If cash allows, start with ads to get calls and reviews. If it doesn’t, set up the Google Business Profile properly, ask every customer for a review, and add ads when you can fund a fair test.
Three cash flow traps
- Paying for clicks before the jobs pay you. Click costs build while the campaign runs, but a customer who books today might pay in four weeks. Work out what you can afford per enquiry: take the profit on an average job and divide it by how many enquiries it takes you to win one. If that number is below what your clicks cost, the campaign loses money however good it looks.
- Starving SEO at month two. The most common SEO failure is stopping just before it starts to work. If you start SEO, decide up front that you will give it a full two quarters.
- Spreading a small ad budget too thin. Fifty dollars a week across the whole of Melbourne teaches you nothing. Pick the three or four suburbs where a job makes you the most money and put the budget there.
Melbourne calendar and ad budgets
Melbourne Cup Day, the first Tuesday in November, is a public holiday in Melbourne. If your phone won’t be answered, an ad is just a paid click that goes nowhere. You can use an ad schedule to switch days off, but Google changed its pacing on 1 June 2026. If you turn off whole days, it now tries to spend up to 30.4 times your daily budget across the days that remain, so your daily budget needs to come down if you want the same monthly spend. Hour-based schedules aren’t affected.
Targeting a spread-out metro
Ads let you choose where you appear and exclude the places you don’t serve. Google’s default location setting is “presence or interest”, which also reaches people who have shown interest in an area. Google offers a presence-only option for advertisers who only want people physically there. If you work in the west and never in the south-east, say so in the settings.
SEO works the other way round. Distance is one of the three things Google weighs for local results, so your premises and service areas set your natural territory. Our Local SEO for Melbourne Businesses guide covers how to extend it without spamming suburb pages.
Rules that apply here
- Quoting prices in ads. ACCC guidance says if you advertise a price that is only part of the total, you should also show the total as a single figure at least as prominently as the part price. That includes GST. Quote the full price or don’t quote one.
- Local Services Ads. This is Google’s pay-per-lead product, and it only covers certain categories. Google’s help page lists the countries it operates in and, at the time of writing, Australia isn’t on it. Don’t plan around it.
- Ads don’t help your rankings. Google is clear that taking part in advertising doesn’t affect organic ranking.
A cash-tight sequence for the first 90 days
- Week 1: set up conversion tracking so calls and form fills are counted. Google Ads conversion tracking explained walks through it.
- Week 2: fix your Google Business Profile: categories, services, hours and photos.
- Week 3: check your real click costs in Keyword Planner for your suburbs, then decide whether the numbers work for your margins.
- Weeks 4 to 8: if you run ads, keep them tight and read the search terms every week. If you start with SEO, work through the Melbourne local SEO checklist.
- Week 12: compare cost per enquiry from each source. Move budget to whichever is cheaper per job won, not per click.
The short version
Urgent trade with cash to test: ads first. Shopfront or project business with time: SEO and reviews first. Most Melbourne businesses that can afford it end up running both, with SEO taking over the terms that ads were paying for. Frequently asked questions
Can I switch my ads off on public holidays like Melbourne Cup Day?
Yes, you can use an ad schedule to turn days off. But Google changed budget pacing from 1 June 2026. If you switch off whole days, it now tries to spend up to 30.4 times your daily budget across the days that remain, so each live day can spend more. Lower your daily budget if you want the monthly total to stay the same.
How do I find out what clicks will cost me in Melbourne before I commit?
Open Keyword Planner in a Google Ads account, set the location to Melbourne or the suburbs you serve, and look at the top of page bid columns for your keywords. They are Google's estimate of what advertisers have bid to show at the top of the page, not a quote. Multiply a realistic click cost by the number of clicks it takes you to get one enquiry.
Can I advertise only in the western suburbs and skip the CBD?
Yes. You choose the locations you target and you can exclude areas you don't serve. Google's default setting also reaches people who have shown interest in a location, not just people in it. If you only want people who are actually in your patch, choose the presence option.
Do my ads have to show GST-inclusive prices?
If an ad quotes a price that is only part of what the customer will pay, ACCC guidance is that the total should also appear as a single figure, at least as prominently, and that includes GST. A safe habit is to quote the full price or avoid quoting one. This is not legal advice, so check anything borderline with your adviser.
Will running Google Ads help my Google Maps ranking?
No. Google says taking part in advertising has no positive or negative effect on organic ranking, and that there is no way to pay for a better local ranking. Ads can put you in front of people today. The map pack is earned through your profile, reviews and proximity.
