Tourism AI visibility report: who do AI tools recommend?

When a traveller asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Google’s AI results what to book in New Zealand, which operators get named? This report tests it with the same questions, the same method and a simple score, so you can see where operators stand.

The basics

What is an AI visibility report?

An AI visibility report shows whether, and how, AI tools name a business when a traveller asks them for recommendations. It is the AI equivalent of checking where you rank on Google, except the answer is a written recommendation, not a list of links.

EightySix Digital is a New Zealand digital marketing agency that helps tourism and adventure operators get named in AI answers, and booked direct as a result. See GEO for tourism operators.

  • It measures being named. Appearing in the answer is the goal, not just having a page that could rank.
  • It checks where the link goes. A mention that sends travellers to a booking platform is worth less than one that sends them to your own site.
  • It is a snapshot. AI answers change, so the report records when each test was run.

Methodology

How the test works.

The same questions, asked the same way, scored by the same rules. Simple enough to repeat and check.

01

Which AI tools

ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google’s AI results (AI Overviews and AI Mode, where they appear for the query). These are the tools travellers are most likely to use to plan a trip.

02

Which queries

Natural questions a traveller would ask, built from a template for each activity and region: “Best [activity] in [region]?”, “Who should I book for [activity] in [region]?” and “What are the top-rated [activity] operators near [town]?”

03

How each is run

Each query is run in a fresh session, with the same wording on every tool, and repeated several times, because AI answers vary from one run to the next. The date of each run is recorded.

04

How it is scored

Per tool: 0 if the operator is not named, 1 if it is named, 2 if it is named and the answer links to the operator’s own site. Three tools give a score out of 6.

05

What counts as a mention

The operator’s name appears in the written answer or its list of recommendations. A source link alone, without the name in the answer, is recorded in the notes but not scored.

06

The limits

Answers vary by person, place and time, and the tools change often. This is a snapshot from one set of runs, not a ranking, and it can’t say why an operator was or wasn’t named.

What to do next

Want to know how you show up?

If you run a tour, lodge or adventure business, I can run the same questions for your business and tell you plainly where you stand, and what would help. Being named by AI comes from clear information on your own site, consistent listings, genuine reviews and mentions from sources AI trusts.

What is a tourism AI visibility report?

It is a test of which tourism operators AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI results name when a traveller asks for recommendations. Each operator is scored on whether it is named and whether the answer links to its own site.

Why do the results vary between runs?

AI tools write a fresh answer each time, and the answer can depend on the person, their location and the tool’s latest update. That is why each query is run more than once and why the report records the date. Treat the results as a snapshot, not a fixed ranking.

Can you get my business named by AI?

I can’t guarantee it, because the tools decide who they name. What I can do is improve the things they draw on: clear information on your own site, consistent listings, genuine reviews and credible mentions. See GEO for tourism operators and SEO for tourism operators.

Can you check how my business shows up?

Yes. Get in touch and I’ll run the same questions for your business and your region, and tell you plainly what the tools say. It is a good first step before deciding whether GEO is worth adding to your plan. Ask for a check →

How does AI visibility connect to direct bookings?

If an AI answer names you and links to your own website, the traveller can book with you directly. If it names a booking platform instead, the booking and the commission go there. See how direct bookings work →
